Protest over the Mullaperiyar Dam intensifies

Thiruvananthapuram: Protests surrounding the safety concerns over the Mullaperiyaar Dam in Kerala have intensified. Despite meeting the Prime Minister on Tuesday, state leaders are considering calling a special assembly session over the issue.

Day two of the strike in Idukki district in Kerala which houses the controversial Mullaperiyar Dam, the national highway at Kumily which borders Tamil Nadu continued to be blocked by protesters.

Political leaders and workers across party lines took to the streets feeding on the fears of locals who have lived with frequent but mild tremors in and around the dam region.

The social network has also been abuzz with Save Mullaperiyar slogans, with even videos warning of an impending disaster perhaps fuelled by the recent film ‘Dam 999’.

Activists claim this is a way to reach out to people outside Idukki district and raise awareness. The Chief Minister's office says it has received more than 6,000 e-mails and as many as 1,000 calls in the last few days expressing concern over the issue.

Apart from the protests on the ground in Idukki, save mullaperiyar slogan has gone viral online. Raging debates on Facebook and Twitter and the pictorial graphics showing a fully submerged land due to a dam collapse have added onto a sense of panic. But will the emotional outbursts bring us closer to finding a solution?

Arsenal's Wilshere a future target for Madrid

Madrid: Real Madrid have drawn up an ambitious plan for the future, in which Arsenal and England star Jack Wilshere has been listed as one of five young transfer targets for the Spanish giants.

According to a report in the Marca under the headline 'Operation Madrid 2014', a leaked club document has outlined their future plans, whereby they will focus on buying young stars who are already playing at the top level, such as Wilshere.

The other potential signings named are Borussia Dortmund striker Mario Gotze, Lille's Belgian winger Eden Hazard, Barcelona defender Rafinha Alcantara and Athletic Bilbao winger Iker Muniain.

The policy is in stark contrast to the club's earlier Galactico policy, when under then-president Florentino Perez, Real Madrid spent record amounts on signing big names like Luis Figo and Zinedine Zidane between 2000-06. Even during Perez's second term at the Bernabeu club, Madrid spent a combined 160 million Pounds on Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Karim Benzema. For Ronaldo, Manchester United were paid a world-record 80 million Pounds.
